Our History

We are fourth generation farmers who love the land! Now turned vignerons, our vines, draw from the rich soils of Mt Barker in the Great Southern region of Western Australia and exhibit the terroir of this exceptional region.

Being family run it was the third generation of Gilberts who took the leap into establishing a vineyard with Jim and Bev Gilbert planting the first of our vines in 1985. Subsequent plantings were also made in 1987, 1989, 1994 and 1997 leaving us with 24 acres of vineyard producing fantastic Riesling, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our cellar door was established by Jim and Bev Gilbert, opening in 1990. The cellar door was established in the old apple packing shed on the property. The building was used by the first two generations of Gilberts. It retains its history and character today creating a unique environment for you to sample and enjoy our award winning wines.

In 2003, Jim and Bev Gilbert extended onto the cellar door a wine café. Once again ahead of the times, Jim and Bev noticed a unique opportunity in the area, creating one of the first cellar doors to have a café attached in the region. The café is open Friday to Monday 10am to 5pm for you to enjoy the best local produce and food our region has to offer whilst also enjoying a glass or bottle of our award winning wines.

In 2014, the fourth generation of Gilberts returned to the family business with two of Jim and Bev's three sons (Clinton and Matthew) stepping into the family business.With big shoes to fill both Matthew and Clinton have set about putting their own footprint on the business. Matthew is our current viticulturist and Clinton head of sales and marketing for our wines.

In February 2017, tragically we lost founder Jim Gilbert to the terrible Motor Neuron Disease aged 62. Jim played a huge role in helping us grow to where we are today. The work done in the early years to establish a world class vineyard and award winning wines can never be understated. We pay tribute to Jim with the JMG range of wines released in 2018. The 'JMG' being his initials. Ifyou look closely at the label you will see all of Jim's interests in the background. Jim loved life and living for the moment!

Now in the year 2023, 38 years since our establishment, many new challenges lay ahead, the family team of Bev, Clinton and Matthew Gilbert will continue to strive for excellence and deliver award winning wines from our cool climate vineyard.
